Nick Scandone March 4, 1966 - January 2, 2009
It is with great sorrow that I inform you that my husband Nick passed peacefully at home on January 2nd, 2009. I will miss him terribly but know he is without pain and suffering. My love and heart goes out to all who share this sorrow. On behalf of Nick I want to thank ever so deeply all who have been a part of this incredible journey. Without your support and love the incredible dream could not have become a reality. A memorial service will be held on Sunday, January 18, 2009 at 2:00 p.m. at Balboa Yacht Club, 1801 Bayside Dr., Corona del Mar, CA 92625. I lieu of flowers please make donations to BYC MSSF, 1901 Newport Blvd., Suite 350, Costa Mesa, CA 92627 OR the ALS organization www.alsa.org
With love and gratitude,
Mary Kate Scandone

Mary Kate,
The Kenney Family sends its prayers, love and heart to you. You and Nick are the epitome of grace and dignity! You are both champions!

Mary Kate,
I had the honor of meeting your husband and brother-in-law in Qingdao during the Paralympics. The expat community here is greatly saddened by your news and your family is in our prayers.
Nick had a sublime confidence, gentle manner and it was amazing to see the supportive team off the water standing by him.
Again, it was an honor to meet him.
Sincerely,
Ryan Blocher

MK, I will in spirit be with you all for the service. Physically I will be here in Maine. Many memories and of note the time Nick and I motored back from Ensanada to San Diego after the race and I woke Nick to see a whale an her calf off the port quarter. His look was most memorable; part sleepy, mostly amazed. Thank you. Peace. Graham

Dear Mary Kate- Was saddened to hear of Nicks passing yesterday. I was in Qingdao for the sailing as my god daughter Alexandra Rickham was sailing scud class also .. and would see nick passing by daily. His spirit was strong and encouraging from even that distance … and I was thrilled to know he got the Gold. I have a few photos taken of him at the closing ceremony .. if you would like them, send me an email and I will forward to you.
Am sure he must still be smiling …

We are so sorry to learn that the end has finally arrived on Nick’s journey. He was, and will always be, an inspiration to all of us who were honored to know him.
Although we cannot be with you for the service on Sun., our hearts will be with you then and always. We will call when we return to So. Cal., and look forward to seeing you then.
God bless you and Nick for all you accomplished.

Mary Kate,
I am so very sorry for your loss. My prayers and thoughts continue to be with you.
It was always so apparent to Rob and I what a great “team” you and Nick made. His love, respect, and deep admiration for you was always present in his eyes whenever we were all together. Plus, you definately made him smile and laugh; Always a good sign of a strong marriage. From where I stood, you and Nick shared a very special marriage, and a bond that only very few can claim. You were both so lucky to have each other. You are, and always have been, an amazing woman. I just wanted you to know that is recognized by many, as is the loving marriage and amazing friendship that you and Nick shared. No doubt Nick and Rupert are sailing the oceans of Heaven as I write this. Much love, Jennifer

Mary Kate,
Sorry for your loss. I contacted Nick a couple of years ago when I saw a story on him on ABC News.
I’m sure somewhere along the line we were realted. He did send a reply back about having relatives in New Jersey.
Wishing you comfort and peace in your time of sadness.

Mary Kate,
We have never met, but I grew up sailing with Nick at BYC. We lost touch after high school, but exchanged e-mails a few years back.
It is hard to imagine how anything I can say or type can help with your loss, but I was extremely fond of Nick. Yes, he was a great sailor, had a great zest for life, great sense of humor, and, given his response to ALS, great courage and tenacity, qualities that high school did not require.
But, my depth of my feelings for Nick came from his kindness. When we were sailing together, he was funny, popular, having a great time. I loved sailing, but my high school years were often socially painful and the sailing crowd, while not mean, was not always kind. Nick was, though he did not need to be.
He remains in my thoughts.
